vote bannerI read an article by Joel Betz in World magazine recently. He raised some insights about the negative attitudes that  people often display when talking politics or elections. Christians should approach these topics in a godly way. He shared 4 ways believers can contribute positively…

1. Turn away wrath.
It is tempting for Christians to get angry when discussing politics. Refrain from all excuses to return evil with evil. To respond to evil in a biblical manner we need to soften our answer.

2. Determine Facts.
There is a difference between facts and opinions. As a Christian, we understand the Bible is fact and and should be the basis of our opinion. It’s okay to have an opinion about things the Bible says nothing about. However, it is dangerous when Christians begin to call opinion what the Bible states as fact and true. It is also important to not state as Bible fact something that is clearly not stated as such in the Bible. “If you’re sloppy with your facts, why should anybody trust your opinions?”

3. Be Calm.
Quiet power is always impressive. Yet, people are inclined to raise their voice to make their point. When you’re right, you don’t have to yell to make it more right. Be calm.

4. Be Respectful.
The Bible encourages Christians to “esteem others better than themselves.” The desire to argue should never overcome our desire to first sit down with an opponent for a face to face discussion. It’s always easier to talk or write negatively about someone we’re not likely to meet face to face anytime soon. But always show respect to everyone, especially those in authority. But what if they don’t deserve respect? Who does but God? Resect says more about the one giving it than the one receiving it.

These are just a few thoughts as you approach a potentially volatile election. May the best man or woman win!
