I think most Christians struggle with maintaining Jesus as their #1 priority.  Life has so many distractions.  Everything screams for our attention.  But Jesus just whispers in our ear.  And it’s easy to turn up the volume of our life so we don’t have to hear Him.  But often the troubles of life cause us to return to what really matters – our relationship with God.

For those of you who desire to have Jesus #1 in your life and don’t want to cares of this life to distract you, I have good news. Jesus has given us some help.  In His greatest sermon, Jesus gave some great wisdom.

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” (Matthew 6:33-34).

Jesus gives us two things we can do to maintain the right balance in our Christian life.

 1. Put first things first

When you have have your priorities in place and live them out, it is amazing how smooth life becomes. And Jesus is to be our #1 priority.

God’s kingdom – Jesus rules over His people. The only ones in the kingdom are those born again. This is a call to be involved in bringing people into His kingdom.

God’s righteousness – This is a broader concept. Because God is righteous, He desires it in every human experience. We are to make His righteousness attractive so others will desire it and to impress His righteousness on the world around us.

When Jesus, His kingdom and His righteousness are #1 in your life, all the other issues of life will find their place. But if you allow Jesus to slip from His throne in your life, everything else will fight for pre-eminence.

It’s like when I was a kid at my grandparents house in Kentucky. They didn’t have many kids toys, but they did have Lincoln Logs.  We would play with them for hours, making log cabins. Then when it was time to go home we had to put them in the package. But sometimes they didn’t fit.  Because the only way to make them fit into the box was to put the big pieces in first, then the medium pieces, and finally the little bitty pieces.  Get them out of order and you will have too many big pieces that can’t fit in the box.  It’s the same in our Christian life. Make sure you have Jesus #1 in your time, energy, finances, and focus.

2. Live one day at a time.

We all tend to worry and worry puts our focus on the temporary and not on the eternal.  Most people experience double worry. They worry about today’s concerns and then they worry about tomorrow’s problems.  But Jesus reminds us that tomorrow has enough trouble by itself.  Don’t contaminate today by corrupting it with tomorrow’s troubles. And most of the things we worry about never happen. So,  we worry for nothing. If it does happen, we worried twice instead of once. In both cases it is foolish. And remember, most things are never as bad as you worry them to be.

Jesus encourages us to do today what needs to be done. I’ve noticed that the people who worry about tomorrow, seldom do the things they should today. They are more concerned with tomorrow and yesterday and let today slip away.  Do what needs to be done and do it well.  In Luke 10:38-42 Martha was worried and bothered. Jesus told her to that one thing was needed. They didn’t need a meal, just a sandwich. Certain things need to be done. Get them done.  Concentrate on God and His kingdom.

Worry can’t change the future. We simply must leave that in God’s hands. If you are not sure you have accepted Christ as Savior, you can do that today and leave all your tomorrows in His hands. If you have accepted Christ as Savior, and yet are worrying about your tomorrows, that’s not your job. Leave your troubles in the hands of the Savior. He will take care of them and you.

I hope this helps. You will never regret living your life with Jesus your #1 priority.

Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.
