Despicable Me 2 is a cute movie with a lot of funny scenes. But I thought about the oddity of a movie claiming that being despicable was funny. Is sin fun? Yes it is!
Most respectable people don’t like to talk about it, but there’s pleasure in sin. Hebrews 11:25 tells us Moses chose to side with God’s people rather than “…enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season…” Two things about sin:
1. Sin is pleasurable.
Sin is fun. Why? I think God allowed sin to be pleasurable because sin not had a temporary enticement, no one would ever do it. Have you ever noticed that doing right takes a conscious effort. Doing bad comes on its own. I’ve often thought why God didn’t make broccoli taste like chocolate. I think it’s because God wants us to choose to do right because it’s right.
Sin looks good on the outside, but inside it’s nasty and evil. Righteousness is wonderful on the inside, but the outside looks ordinary and plain, even dull. Sin has it’s pleasure, but…
2. Sin’s pleasure is temporary.
The pleasure only lasts for a season. Just a short time. Eventually, the sowing of sin will reap a bumper crop of difficulty and regret.
Sin is like the old Fram oil filter commercials. You can pay me now or pay me later. You can enjoy the pleasures of sin now and pay for it for years to come. Or you can pay the cost of doing it right and reap the benefits for years to come. It’s your choice.
