Despicable Me 2 is a funny cartoon movie. But what does the word ‘despicable’ mean?

Despicable is a word that means ‘deserving to be despised.’  Another definition is ‘so worthless or obnoxious as to rouse moral indignation.’  The title ‘Despicable Me’ is an admission that in me is an attribute that deserves to be despised. We all have a sin nature

So, what is sin?

1. Sin is doing anything that we know is wrong.

The word used is ‘trespass.’  To trespass on someone’s property is to cross the line, to go where we aren’t supposed to go.  Sin is crossing the line God has told us not to cross.

I had someone ask me last Sunday if I ever pray for God to forgive me for sins I don’t know are sins.  Yes, I do.  Just because I don’t recognize it doesn’t mean it’s not wrong.  There have been things in my life I thought were okay, but later I’ve realized I shouldn’t have done them.  Anything we do that we shouldn’t is a sin.

2. Sin is not doing anything we know we should.

This is the opposite of doing wrong. If we don’t do right, that’s wrong as well. God tells us, “Therefore to him that knows to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17).  The word ‘sin’ helps us understand.  Not only is ‘sin’ used as a Bible word, it is also an archery term.  When you aim at a bullseye, but miss it. the difference is called the ‘sin.’  So sin is missing the mark – not doing what you are supposed to do. That is why many will have to answer to the Lord for not helping ‘the least of these.’

3. Sin is not acting in faith.

What if you don’t know if something is right or wrong?  As my mom used to say, ‘When in doubt, don’t!’  God tells us “Whatsoever is not of faith is sin” (Romans 14:23).  So, if you’re not sure, but go ahead without faith and trust in God, it’s a sin.

What do I do with sin?  Bring it to God.  That was the mistake of Judas Iscariot.  He committed one of the worst sins ever committed in mankind’s history. He betrayed the Son of God, Jesus Christ, to be condemned to die.  He felt a conviction that he had done wrong. But instead of bringing his sin to God, he brought it to the religious leaders.  His guilt led him to commit suicide.

If you have sin, bring it to God. Confess and forsake it.  He has promised, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  (1 John 1:9).
