Some things are easy. Some things are hard. But there are some things seem impossible. But not with God… with God nothing is impossible. All things are possible with God.
In Mark 10:23-31, Jesus discusses the impossible. I found three things in this Scripture passage that may prevent you from doing the impossible.
1. Riches
Jesus explained that it was very difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of God (not impossible, but difficult). This is true because the rich, with most of their basic physical needs met, often become self-reliant. When they feel empty, they can buy something new to dull the pain that was meant to drive them toward God. Their abundance and self-sufficiency become their deficiency. People who have everything on earth can still lack what is most important – eternal life. They have riches, but they don’t have God’s kingdom.
Riches can keep a person from doing the impossible because it keeps them from trusting God. The amount of money doesn’t matter. Even poor people can allow their lack of money to hinder their trust in God to do the impossible.
The only way to curb the control riches have on you is to give it away. That is why Jesus told the rich, young ruler to sell all he had and give to the poor. You may not need to give it all away. But I think a good start is to give God 10% of your income. You will discover that your trust in God will open the door to doing the impossible.
2. Mistaken Belief
The disciples were amazed that the rich would have a hard time getting into the kingdom of God. They believed in an ancient rendition of ‘prosperity theology’ taught by the rabbis, who equated God’s blessings with material prosperity. Surely the rich would get in the kingdom. But Jesus taught that riches, rather than a benefit, were a deficit to get in God’s kingdom.
Sometimes people just have bad thinking. It is easy to think a situation as impossible. But God loves to help people who simple trust Him. But just because you believe the impossible can be done by God doesn’t mean it will be done. Even the possible isn’t always accomplished. But knowing that the impossible ‘could’ happen will give you strength, courage, and hope to continue. Never give up believing that God can do the impossible.
3. Worry
Peter spoke for the group and said, ‘Behold, we have left everything and followed you.” He wanted to know what the future held for them.
Our worry about the future will often prohibit us from trusting God to do the impossible. We don’t want to take the actions necessary for God to intervene in our life because of what it may cost us. We are afraid to let go of control of our decisions and trust God and follow His lead.
How do we stop worrying? Worry seems to be an impulse we can’t control. I have found something that has helped me curb my tendency to worry.
I think worry and prayer are motivated by the same emotions and events. I can either worry about it or pray about it. If I worry, it doesn’t accomplish anything. But if I pray, I can touch the God of the impossible. So when you feel like worrying about your problems, simply start praying to God about your problems. Use worry to spur you to pray.
What seems impossible in your life? Talk to God about it. Dream Big! Do the Impossible!
