January-1Well, it’s the first day of a new year. Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions? If you are like most, you have set some goals for this year. However, if you are like the majority, that’s all they will be – goals. Most do not make their resolutions a reality.

Most people make new year’s resolutions to lose weight, stop a bad habit, or improve a relationship. Others want to buy a house or change jobs. All these are great, but on this first day of the year I want to encourage you to make some goals that will have eternal value. These are resolutions/goals are my top 6 spiritual resolutions.

You may have already accomplished some of these. But if you have not, please consider these for this year.

#1 – Trust Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.

Salvation is the greatest opportunity God has given mankind. God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to die on a cross to provide pay the penalty of our sins and provide an eternal home in Heaven. All those who believe and receive Jesus Christ become part of God’s family. Please make that decision this year. If you have, thank God that you are part of His forever family.

#2 – Express your obedience by being baptized.

Trusting Jesus as Lord and Savior is a personal decision. But God doesn’t want it to be private. He wants you to demonstrate your decision and loyalty by being baptized in obedience to His Lordship. Their is nothing magical or supernatural about the baptism water. But baptism does demonstrate one’s sincerity. It is the first step of obedience after becoming a Christian.

#3 – Join a church family.

There is not a perfect church. But church is the perfect place for you to grow in your Christian life. You need others and others need you. Even more than an earthly father, your Heavenly Father wants His family to commit to each other. Attending is not enough. You need to be a member to get all the benefit for your spiritual life.

#4 – Spend time every morning with God.

Private time with God is the most valuable thing you can do for yourself. Start small. Read a small portion of the Bible and then pray a short pray. Start with one of the gospels and read about the life of Jesus. Pray for your family and ask God to guide you. I have discovered that when I start my day with God, the rest of the day goes much better. Try it this year.

#5 – Attend a Sunday School or small group.

Going to a church service is great. But even Jesus invited His closest followers to be in a smaller group for instruction and relationship. Get to know other believers on a deeper level by interacting in a small setting on a regular schedule. In our church, Sunday School is a great opportunity.

#6 – Give to God.

I always hesitate to talk about money because so many misunderstand the motive. Jesus taught that our heart is connected with money. He said, “where your treasure is, there will your heart be…” (Matthew 6:21). God doesn’t need your money. But He wants your heart. Giving finances to God is the quickest way to change your heart to be more godly. Give to your church. Give to missions. Give to Christian endeavors. Give to the poor. When you give, you will always receive more and better than you released.

I hope you experience God’s best for the new year. Try these six top New Year’s Resolutions. What are your spiritual goals for this year?
